Learn the History & See the Beauty of St. Croix with Virgin Kayak Tours

Bryan Updyke moved to St. Croix in 1989, from Sweet Valley Pennsylvania, after hurricane Hugo. The neighbors thought he was crazy, but he bought and moved into a wrecked house, and put it back together himself.

After a visit here to see her sister, who introduced her to Bryan, Jill moved here from Maryland in 1995. They shared a love for being on the water and, when they heard about Hobie's new pedal kayaks in 1998, opened up Virgin Kayak Tours in Cane Bay. These kayaks are propelled through the water with either paddles or foot-operated pedals and offer a new way to explore the beauty of St Croix, while getting a full body workout!

Full-day tours include Green Cay Nature Preserve, Shell Island, Sandy Point Wildlife Preserve, and Robin's Bay while half-day tours take you to Cane Bay, Anally Bay, Hamm's Bluff, Altoona Lagoon, Salt River Bay, and the ever-popular Bio-Bay Night Tour where tiny organisms light up the water.

New this season is a weeklong Adventure Package with camping at Cane Bay and custom kayak and hiking tours daily. Single or double kayaks are available but Jill cautions guests with a smile saying,

"Whichever direction your relationship is headed, a tandem kayak will get you there that much faster!"

They love talking about mangroves, migratory birds, the environment, the reef system, and history. Bryan is passionate about Caribbean Pre-Columbian art and history starting each Salt River Bay Tour at their Indigenous Arts and Crafts Museum. Here there are artifacts and replicas made by Bryan himself. He teaches a ceramics course as well and encourages school children to come and visit.

When not on the water, Bryan and Jill spend time cleaning up Salt River Bay's Columbus Landing Site, advocating for St Croix's natural and historical resources, and working on hiking trails throughout the Cane Bay area.
